Dorit Margreiter’s film “Pavilion“ tells us something about the contingent relationship between the status of the image and the space inside as well as outside of the projection. Josef Hoffmann’s vision of an ideal exhibition space for Austrian painting and sculpture in the Giardini in Venice serves as the key element and backdrop for Dorit Margreiter’s film installation “Pavilion“. The pavilion, built in 1934, is an architectural monument and exhibition space that is only used during the summer months and disappears from the public eye for the rest of the year.

Margreiter examines how the relationship between the pavilion’s function as historic architecture and its role as a setting that fades into the background is repeatedly re-negotiated in the moment of its presentation.

In her work, the pavilion becomes the setting for multiple interactions in which the artist visually merges the building’s interior and exterior, thus restoring its status as the prototype of an exhibition space. […]
